Bogota 2011From 01 to June 5 - Bogotá hosted the World Barista Championship - Experts in brewing coffee.

What is a barista? - The definition can be broad, but simply could be said they are experts in the use, handling and preparation of coffee. This championship has been disputed since 2000 and this time brought together 53 representatives of their nations coming from every continent. The baristas had to pass a few preliminary rounds until the end facing the top 6. 4 sensory judges are responsible for assessing the taste of beverages, the presence, cream, texture, etc. and 2 technical judges control the technique and the use of the espresso machine. All this overseen by a leading judge. The baristas have 15 minutes to convince them serving 4 espressos, 4 cappuccino, and 4 drinks they create using coffee as a main ingredient (no alcohol).

Javier García Fúnez – Spanish Champ 2011 (2010 y 2009) – ended up 4th and only three people were better than him this time - World Champ – Salvador Méndez (El Salvador), Second Pete Licata (United States) amd third Matt Perger (Australia). Javier has had an impressive progression in this type of events (2009 – Atlanta – ended 25; 2010 Londres – ended 16) and now we can find him placed among the elite in Baristas World. Javier was not the only representative of Spain, Elisabet Sereno and Jon Willassen - our Director - acting as judges. A hard job that requires deep coffee knowledge.

Next stop - Maastricht - Holland - from the 20 til 24th of June - World Championship in Latte art - the art to create drawings in coffee - and Cupping. Again we will have Spanish representatives. Our Champs Damián Seijas (Latte art) and Xavi Iglesias (Cupping) will try to do their best. Good Luck!
